Krista Lynn Sandstrom

Krista Lynn Sandstrom
February 19, 1970 –June 1, 2017
Forty-Seven Years

Courage is more exhilarating than fear
and in the long run it is easier.

We do not become heroes overnight,
but rather one step at a time,

meeting each thing that arises,
discovering it is not as dreadful

as it appeared and discovering we
have the strength to stare it down.

The Victim Impact Statement I read before the Judge, our children and Krista's Killer here:

KRISTA LYNN SANDSTROM of St. Paul was killed in a traffic accident in downtown Minneapolis on June 1, 2017. Krista was born on February 19, 1970 to Charles and Deanna Barks Sandstrom in Northfield, MN. She was united in marriage to Kent Christian McGuire on October 2, 1993. She was preceded in death by her mother. Survived by her husband, her son Soren and daughter Birgitta, her father and his wife Dianne Kelly, her brother Scott Sandstrom and step siblings, Kathy Kelly, Amy Kelly, Anne Kelly Berg and Bill Kelly, and many friends and relatives.
Krista graduated from Northfield High School and received her undergraduate degrees in History and Anthropology with a minor in Classical Civilizations from Luther College in Decorah, Iowa. She obtained her M.Ed and Ph.D from the University of Minnesota and was employed as Director of Organization Development and Learning for Hennepin County Medical Center.

Music played a great role in her life. She was a contracted singer with the Minnesota Chorale and sang regularly with her husband as a member of the New Prescriptions. As an instrumentalist, she played oboe and bassoon, and was learning violin so she could play along with her children for their June 8th recital. Krista recently purchased a mandolin which she hoped would add to her involvement with music.  She loved dance, as well. She choreographed dances, set up mirrors and a ballet bar in her living room, and recently began taking Saturday morning ballet classes.
Krista practiced environmental conservation and responsible living. The front yard of the family home is decorated with native Minnesota wild flowers and grasses while the back yard is becoming a haven for birds, butterflies, and bees. Krista was an active supporter of rescue animals, Heifer International, and other organizations focusing on humane activities.

Visitation will be held for Krista at the MUELLER-BIES FUNERAL HOME-ROSEVILLE, 2130 North Dale St. @ Co. Rd B, Thursday, June 8, 4 – 8 PM.
An open gathering is planned on Friday, June 9, between the hours of 11:00 AM and 2:00 PM with a short program featuring the Minnesota Chorale is scheduled for noon at the Muriel Sahlin Arboretum, 2525 North Dale Street, Roseville, MN.
Those attending may bring a sack lunch and lawn chairs. Water, coffee, and cookies will be provided. Feel free to bring an instrument and your singing voice for impromptu special music and conversation. Memorials may be designated for the children's education, to the Minnesota Chorale, 528 Hennepin Ave #407, Minneapolis, MN 55403 or to the family. While Krista and I would often include each others surname with our own,  Her legal name is still just Krista L. Sandstrom; and mine is K. Christian McGuire - our kids however bear the surname Sandstrom-McGuire

Here is a lovely piece regarding the positive impact Krista had upon us all.

Here is the WCCO interview in which I share our children's perspective on their mother’s death.

What I wrote to friends and family on June 3rd, 2017
"Finally as a request, though I feel sad and angry...Do not hate.  Do not hate the driver who killed my wife.  Thoughts of Hatred and vengeance and fear stem from weakness and cowardice.  When so often on Social media we are losing the capacity to connect. We no longer engage in conversation where we dedicate our minds and senses to each other and build strong memories.  Instead we talk at each other through screens and become indignant as digital soundbites prick our most base passions. It is the negative emotions and deflections of responsibility that often rise to the surface.
These are unproductive and are not the values my bride and I wanted for the world in which our children live.
So in Honor of Krista Lynn Sandstrom and her children - Do not blame the judge who released the driver. The judge did not kill my wife.  The judge was not responsible for the actions of this driver.  It was the driver who made the bad decision which led to her death.
Yes it is painful and I continue to swing through emotions and cry ---- and I sincerely appreciate your care thoughts and sharing your pain and emotions with me.  But lets seek Harmonia – Love – lifting each other up to excel in our diverse talents – not to compete against each other.  We want to live the Values and Virtues we teach.
